Retreat of a root canal

6) rubber dam isolation

Patient presents for major pain. Pictures 1 and 2 depict a previous root canal treatment and a crown and a filling. Both teeth were failing. Notice that the patient was a major smoker and white patches are visible. He was also sent to check possible smoking related cancer issues.

1) existing crown and silver filling

2) barely visible short filled canals with the crown

The crown was removed in order to get access to the already treated root canal system. The golden screw is the previous post by another DDS as well. Pictures 3-6 will show the tooth isolated with the use of a rubber dam. The previous root canal filling was removed and the canal structure cleansed thoroughly followed by a new root canal filling material.

3) post (gold) and old root filling (pink)

4)old fill (pink) and gold post removed

5) canal debridement of old root canal filling

7)old silver filling removed

8) After decay removal both teeth were built up and prepared for their crowns.

9) Lab fabricated gold crowns

10) Gold crowns cemented in place. Gold was chosen because the patient wanted to get the maximum amount of service from the area without tending to the future early wear and tear seen in other types of crowns such as porcelain.

Crowns in place before cementation and verified by radiographs. Notice the dense root canal filling and compare to figure 2.

11) crowns with one root canal treatment

This case was completed in 2003 without any recurrence of concern.
